About this project
Innovative Action description
Cities have a high monitoring effort in the area of infrastructure maintenance, the planning of traffic and green spaces as well as ensuring general safety in the event of natural disasters or major construction activities.
In order to improve the quality of monitoring and reduce personnel costs, the City of Vienna would like to make greater use of satellite data.
To this end, it founded the Vienna Geospace Hub innovation laboratory in October 2023 with UIV Urban Innovation Vienna, a subsidiary of Wien Holding.
The aim is to promote the interlinking of geodata and satellite data and their innovative application in administration. Vienna Geospace Hub is working on behalf of the City of Vienna with the aim of overcoming the challenges of climate change in cities and regions. This requires standardised and widely available data and models - such as those supplied daily by satellites as European infrastructure.
This could be data on uplift or subsidence as well as temperature or humidity in the soil, water temperature, water quality or water levels or the composition of the atmosphere. Changes in land sealing, vegetation, biodiversity or mobility behaviour can also be recorded, mapped and classified using geodata.
In the innovation lab, this existing geodata is combined with AI models and new use cases are developed. The Vienna Geospace Hub creates an ecosystem in which the administration works together with science and companies to develop new products and services in order to create data-based foundations for climate adaptation measures and achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
In the currently planned funding project, 5 specific use cases are to be developed and analysed.
