The water reclamation plant
In the 1st zoom-in of the GUARDIAN project, UIA expert Elsa Pastor dives into the first piece of water infrastructure designed and implemented in GUARDIAN.

In particular, she provides insights on the water reclamation plant that will deliver recycled water for fire mitigation and protection in Riba-Roja and Paterna WUI areas. To provide background information, she explores the environmental issues related to Organic Micropollutants (OMPs), mainly focusing on the Júcar river Basin water quality, and she presents front-line technologies available to remove OMPs. Next, she gives details of the Guardian approach used to remove OMPs from the waster water that has to be used for wildfire management purposes. The implemented process consists on ozonation followed by biofiltration, and is intended to remove not only chlorpyrifos, which has been targeted as a compound to be removed, but also to provide a broad removal of OMPs, including pesticides and pharmaceuticals, personal care products and endocrine disrupting compounds.
