Migrants and refugees integration: first lessons to share from the UIA projects
In June 2019, the four UIA Experts working with the four projects selected under the migrants and refugees integration topic in the first Call for Proposals got to work on collecting and reflecting on the first lessons emanating from the innovative solutions being implemented in Antwerp, Vienna, Utrecht and Bologna. The four projects are now in the last of the three years of implementation.
Supported by their UIA experts, the projects have identified four key aspects that can bring added value to the role that cities can play in tackling the challenge of integration in our society. These are:
1. Personalized case management and support services for successful integration
2. The geography of integrated services for migrants
3. Leveraging public opinion and political support: the role of citizens and stakeholders
4. Effective integration and the need of a multilevel governance
To further deepen but also open the conversation around these common questions to other urban stakeholders in Europe, a capitalisation workshop was held on 12 June in Antwerp, followed by a site visit of the BREM 16 - CURANT co-housing project on 13 June. Policy input from DG Regional and Urban Policy as well as DG Migration and Home Affairs stressed the key role that cities should play to solve the challenges of migrants and refugees integration that Europe is currently facing. The workshop also included an update on the Urban Agenda Partnership on inclusion of migrants and refugees.
