CALICO website goes live!
CALICO started in November 2018, having been selected as a housing project for UIA’s third call. 2021 is the year of its completion, with the building expected to be delivered sometime in late May and inhabitants expected to move in in late summer.

The inhabitants’ group is mostly complete, and even though contact has been significantly reduced following the sanitary measures put in place in Belgium to contain the COVID-19 pandemic, the project managers are doing their best to prepare the future CALICO dwellers for their arrival.

CALICO is carried by a wide partnership, ranging from local associations to regional authorities. Together, they are hard at work bringing together the vision of Care and Living in Community that the project’s title implies: co-creation of a mutual community care system, birth and end-of-life facilities, all of this within an intergenerational, gender-sensitive housing project with a cultural and social mix.

On the CALICO website, you will find not only a thorough description of the project and the numerous concepts and ambitions it carries as well as its partnership and extended partners, but you will also be able to follow the latest news and development. This website’s ambition, currently coordinated by the CALICO project managers, is to be entirely managed by the CALICO inhabitants following their moving-in, which will give the website a first-person perspective on life there.

Project CALICO is currently ongoing with building works expected to be completed by late may, with moving-in expected to follow up. At the time of writing, we expect to be able to do an inauguration by early September and hopefully make it a festive event for inhabitants and neighbors alike, if the sanitary situation allows.

We hope to organize the final conference of the project during the European week of regions and cities of October 2021. It will be the moment to share the CALICO experience, what we learned, what we would like to disseminate and replicate, and the research conducted by VUB during this period.
