Challenges and Solutions

The project addressed the issue of insufficient collaboration between businesses and Palacký University in Olomouc. Thanks to the project, a dedicated space for this collaboration was created. The former "Envelopa" nightclub building was transformed into a modern, sustainable facility with a green façade. The newly named Envelopa Hub, located near other university faculties, now houses coworking offices, an innovation hub focused on healthcare and IT with support services for small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as a science and technology park that ensures the protection and commercial use of the university’s intellectual property. Students and university staff now have the opportunity to engage directly with local businesses and establish partnerships.

There are three main parts/functions of the Envelopa hub:

1) DIGI2Health is a Digital Innovation Hub focused on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the field of healthcare. Based in the Olomouc Region, it offers access to digital expertise, new technologies, testing facilities, and prototype development, helping businesses innovate and digitalize their processes. By connecting science and business through key institutions like the National Telemedicine Center, Palacký University Science and Technology Park, and the Olomouc Region Innovation Centre, DIGI2Health fosters collaboration and drives forward practical applications of research. Its mission is to integrate regional companies into the European network of digital innovation hubs and contribute to the future of digital healthcare.

2) The Science and Technology Park of Palacký University (VTP UP) is a center for innovation and technology transfer, supporting the creation of startups and spin-off companies with a strong focus on leveraging the university’s research potential. It connects businesses with the academic world, provides access to new technologies, and offers a wide range of services for both university members and external partners. As a hub for collaboration between innovative firms and research institutions, VTP UP also protects and commercializes intellectual property and supports the smooth launch and growth of new technology-driven enterprises through its business incubator.

3) Element Coworking is a friendly and practical space where students, freelancers, and small businesses meet to work, share ideas, and support each other. It’s part of the Envelopa Hub and aims to boost creativity and entrepreneurship in the region. The space has a clean, modern design, a kitchen to grab a coffee or lunch, and a big terrace where people can take a break.

Results and impact

Multiple events, meetings and collaborations are taking place in the building.

Results and impact

The potential for replicating this project is significant, as vacant buildings without a clear purpose – such as the former nightclub – are common in cities like Olomouc that also host universities. The fact that the building was renovated rather than constructed from scratch highlights the potential of such spaces to transform both their immediate surroundings and the broader regional innovation ecosystem.
