The Green City Accord is a movement of European mayors committed to making cities more sustainable by accelerating the implementation of relevant EU environmental laws. Signatories commit to addressing five key areas: air, water, nature and biodiversity, circular economy and waste, and noise.
The GCA calls on cities of the European Union with at least 20,000 inhabitants to safeguard the natural environment and improve the quality of life of Europeans through the signing of the accord. Cities will also be supporting the European Green Deal and the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals.
In addition, Organisations interested in promoting the GCA can become Green City Accord Supporters, mobilising cities to become GCA signatories, and aiding members in implementing their GCA commitments.
Signatories of the Green City Accord are part of a growing movement to guarantee a sustainable and healthy environment for their citizens. Cities are also supporting the European Green Deal and the delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals.
In particular, cities:
• gain Europe-wide visibility in recognition of their environmental actions and achievements
• contribute to shaping EU environmental policy
• are part of a community of like-minded cities driving the transition towards a clean and healthy Europe
• are introduced to a monitoring framework which helps them to collect comparable and standardized data usable for various European tenders
• increase their transparency, accountability, and credibility within the local community
• gain access to information concerning EU funding opportunities
• participate in networking events and benefit from capacity-building opportunities
• receive tailored guidance and support via a dedicated helpdesk
