About this challenge
Poland
Challenge description
Professional activation of older adults is a key element of Warsaw’s strategy for active and healthy aging. With increasing life expectancy and later retirement, supporting seniors who wish to remain in or return to the labor market is essential. Continued employment strengthens financial security, a sense of purpose, and social cohesion. However, challenges persist in encouraging older adults to stay professionally active and in persuading employers to value their experience. Combating age-related stereotypes and promoting age-friendly workplace policies are crucial steps toward a more inclusive labor market.
Challenges:
• Social activation of seniors
In addition to promoting participation in social and cultural life, Warsaw places significant emphasis on extending the working lives of older people, a key aspect of active aging. With increasing life expectancy and later retirement, there is a growing need to support seniors who wish to remain in or re-enter the workforce. Maintaining employment not only ensures financial stability but also fosters social integration, self-fulfillment, and intergenerational exchange. One of the city's main challenges is motivating both older workers and employers to engage in longer, mutually beneficial professional relationships. Many older people possess valuable experience, skills, and institutional knowledge that can significantly benefit workplaces – however, age-related stereotypes and a lack of age-sensitive policies often lead to premature exit from the labor market.

This city is looking for
Our city would benefit from expertise in the development and implementation of strategies that support the professional activation of older adults. This includes knowledge of age-friendly employment models, tools for recognizing and utilizing the potential of senior workers, and methods for combating age-related stereotypes in the workplace. We seek support from experts in inclusive labor market policies, intergenerational cooperation, and the design of training programs tailored to the needs of older individuals—particularly in digital upskilling and reskilling. In addition, experience in motivating employers to adopt senior-inclusive practices and in building partnerships between public institutions, NGOs, and businesses is essential. We also value skills in creating awareness campaigns that promote the social and economic benefits of extended working life. Such expertise would help us strengthen the position of older adults in the labor market and foster a more inclusive, sustainable, and age-diverse workforce.
