Challenge description

Cullera, a coastal municipality in Spain, is facing significant challenges due to climate change, particularly along its seaside promenade. The increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such as storms, rising sea levels, and higher temperatures, poses a threat to the local environment, infrastructure, and the well-being of its residents. In response to these challenges, the municipality has proposed a project aimed at the renaturalization of the maritime promenade and its adaptation to climate change. The primary objective of this project is to restore and enhance the natural environment of the area, while simultaneously reducing the impact of climate change. This includes, native plant species, and the revitalization of coastal ecosystems, such as dunes and wetlands. These natural solutions will not only improve biodiversity but also help mitigate the effects of extreme weather by acting as natural barriers against storms and flooding. Moreover, the project will incorporate sustainable urban design practices, such as permeable surfaces to reduce the risk of flooding, energy-efficient lighting, and the use of renewable energy sources. Additionally, the promenade will be adapted to support the increased heat stress brought on by rising temperatures, offering shaded areas and cooling features to provide comfort for both locals and tourists. A key challenge in this project is balancing environmental restoration with the needs of a busy tourist destination. Cullera's promenade is a popular site for leisure and tourism, which means careful planning is necessary to maintain its functionality while ensuring it becomes more resilient to climate change. Through this renaturalization and adaptation project, Cullera aims to create a more sustainable, resilient, and attractive urban space that can withstand the impacts of climate change, protect its natural environment, and provide a safe and enjoyable experience for its residents and visitors.

This city is looking for

For our renaturalization and climate adaptation project of the maritime promenade, we are looking for a peer city that has implemented a similar initiative, especially one focused on coastal ecosystem restoration and climate resilience. The expertise we would benefit from includes:

Coastal Ecosystem Restoration: We seek a city with experience in restoring coastal ecosystems, such as dunes or wetlands, to enhance biodiversity and mitigate climate impacts like storms and flooding.

Climate Resilience Strategies: Expertise in designing solutions to combat rising sea levels, extreme weather, and urban heat is essential. We are interested in nature-based solutions and sustainable urban planning that improve resilience in coastal areas.

Community Engagement: Effective strategies for involving local communities, businesses, and tourists in the planning and implementation phases are critical for the success of our project.

Sustainable Urban Design: Knowledge in green infrastructure, permeable surfaces, renewable energy, and water management will help us make the promenade more environmentally friendly and climate-resilient.

Tourism and Environmental Balance: Given Cullera’s status as a tourist destination, we need insights on how to balance environmental restoration with maintaining tourism activities and infrastructure.
