Challenge description

One of the key areas requiring development in our early childhood education system is the effective use of outdoor space for organizing child-centered activities. There is a growing awareness of the importance of integrating outdoor learning into daily routines, not only as a form of recreation, but as an essential component of children’s sensory, motor, and creative development. However, we face challenges in planning and conducting such activities in a manner that is both engaging and safe. Staff need guidance on how to effectively use playgrounds and green spaces to provide safe and developmental learning experiences. In particular, there is a need for support in designing outdoor environments that stimulate the senses, encourage movement, and foster imagination—such as through the development of sensory play areas that are inclusive and developmentally appropriate. In addition to spatial and pedagogical considerations, changing parental attitudes remains a significant challenge. Many parents still view outdoor play during colder or less sunny weather as undesirable or even harmful. There is a clear need for educational strategies aimed at parents to promote the health benefits of outdoor time, fresh air, and gradual adaptation to varying weather conditions.

Challenges:
• Organizing Child-Centered Activities
We aim to improve daily care routines through new educational methods and playground use. There's a need for guidance on safe and effective outdoor activities, sensory play spaces, and integrating physical and creative development.
• Parental Attitudes Towards Outdoor Play
Changing parent mindsets around outdoor play in colder or less sunny weather is crucial. Educational approaches are needed to promote outdoor time, fresh air, and resilience-building in children.

This city is looking for

Our city would benefit from expertise in designing and implementing effective outdoor learning environments within nurseries. Specialists with knowledge of child-centered pedagogical approaches and outdoor education are needed to support the development of safe, inclusive, and stimulating playgrounds and sensory play areas that foster children’s sensory, motor, and creative skills. Additionally, guidance on organizing outdoor activities that balance safety with engagement is essential for nursery staff. Expertise in creating practical frameworks and educational methods tailored to outdoor settings would enhance daily routines and support holistic child development. Furthermore, our city requires skills in parental education and community engagement to address prevailing attitudes that limit outdoor play, especially during colder or less sunny seasons. We hope to encourage parents to value outdoor time for its benefits to children’s physical resilience, well-being, and adaptation to weather conditions.
