Solution description
In 2009, the City of Oulu, University of Oulu, Oulu University of Applied Sciences, VTT Technical
Research Center of Finland Ltd and Technopolis Ltd signed the strategic Oulu Innovation Alliance
agreement, the purpose of which was to continue Oulu's long tradition of cooperation between
education, research and business life and the public sector. With the OIA agreement the city wanted to ensure and continue multidisciplinary cooperation connecting the fields of science, research and business across organizational boundaries, and thus help generate business and jobs from research and innovation in strategically selected target sectors. Currently, the Oulu’s RDI alliance is in its 3rd contract period and there are a total of eight signatories, in addition to the original founders: North Ostrobothnia wellbeing services county Pohde, vocational school OSAO and Natural Resources Institute Finland.
During the ongoing strategic period 2021–2027, our vision is to make the Oulu region the best European ecosystem to create global added value with digitalisation, solving ecological, economic, and social sustainability challenges through northern innovations.
Our promise to companies and various stakeholders is to be the best partner for promoting innovations. OIA provides business representatives with an excellent interface to research, development, advancement of expertise, testbeds and trial environments, national and international partnership networks, and potential funding channels.
