Challenge description
With a rich cultural heritage and a growing commitment to sustainable development, Montana is actively working to transform its urban spaces into inclusive, dynamic environments. The city places strong emphasis on youth-led initiatives, cultural programming, and environmental resilience as key drivers of social cohesion and local innovation.
Youth inclusion through non-formal education, creative urban events and sport is essential for fostering active citizenship, innovation, and social cohesion. Unlike traditional education, non-formal learning empowers young people to explore their passions, develop practical skills, and engage with their communities in meaningful ways. Creative urban events—such as pop-up workshops, street art festivals, and community performances—offer platforms for self-expression, collaboration, and cultural exchange. These experiences help young people build confidence, leadership, and a sense of ownership over their environment.
Revitalizing public spaces and building socially inclusive communities led by youth initiatives transforms cities from passive backdrops into vibrant, participatory ecosystems. When young people lead the way in reimagining parks, squares, and abandoned areas, they infuse these spaces with energy, purpose, and inclusivity. Youth-led projects often prioritize accessibility, diversity, and sustainability—values that are crucial for resilient urban development. Moreover, these initiatives foster intergenerational dialogue and bridge social divides, creating communities where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
