Functional Areas in the EU

GRIDLAB is a framework developed by the World Bank as part of the Functional Areas EU project
financed by the European Commission to help functional areas in the EU identify and implement
the most innovative green energy technologies for their particular needs, in order to become active
drivers for a green transition and sustainable development.
In the first part, the document presents a mindset that functional areas can adhere to in order to
constantly be on the cutting edge of green, resilient, inclusive development.

The second part describes in an understandable manner examples of concrete technologies to generate clean energy from available resources, decrease energy consumption, make the energy grid more resilient and store surplus of energy for later use. The examples are given so experts and non-experts alike can see and understand the possibilities that such technologies can offer.

The third part is focused on possible ways for financing the implementation of such technologies in functional areas. Financing examples vary from EU and governmental funds to crowdfunding and are presented so municipalities can decide what is the best option for them. Finally, the document offers some solutions for your functional area that were generated using the GRIDLAB framework.
