WATERWAY is reimagining Galway’s historic waterways as engines of clean energy, climate action and community enhancement. Through the installation of three small-scale hydropower systems, the project generates renewable electricity to decarbonise public infrastructure. Savings will be reinvested into retrofitting buildings and scaling up climate solutions. By blending sustainability with cultural heritage, community engagement and support, WATERWAY will accelerate Galway’s journey to climate neutrality by 2050.
About
WATERWAY reimagines Galway’s historic waterways as a catalyst for sustainable, integrated climate action. Through the installation of three small-scale hydropower turbines, the project will generate renewable electricity for public infrastructure and reinvest the resulting energy savings into local climate initiatives, such as building retrofits and electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure.
The project will also develop a digital energy dashboard, deliver tailored training programmes and establish an outdoor museum to enhance climate literacy. It introduces a practical model to manage renewable energy assets and channel financial returns into priority investments, with structured input from stakeholders throughout the process.
By aligning technical innovation, data management and reinvestment mechanisms, WATERWAY strengthens Galway’s capacity to reach its climate-neutrality goals. It will serve as a replicable example for other cities aiming to build resilient, low-carbon futures.
