Kosice_Sam-Sud

The SAM-SUD project focuses on repurposing underused public infrastructure in Košice – Eastern Slovakia’s industrial and cultural hub – in order to create a network of sustainable, multifunctional spaces. It includes a new digital system for smart asset management, bringing together AI-driven mapping, digital twin technology and participatory planning. The project fosters economic revitalisation by ensuring the transformed assets create new jobs and support for SMEs. And in terms of environmental benefits, repurposing the underused buildings will significantly improve energy efficiency, reducing the city’s carbon footprint.

The City of Košice is grappling with underutilised public infrastructure and a significant number of vacant buildings. At the same time, the city lacks premises for social, cultural and community services. Limitations in capacity and resources are a hurdle to Košice achieving its sustainable development goals, a particularly urgent challenge as new investments have the potential to create thousands of jobs. In response, the main ambition of the SAM-SUD project is to develop and pilot a digital system for smart asset management. The project's objective is to transform vacant and underused public buildings into a portfolio of sustainable and inclusive urban assets. This will be achieved by combining AI-powered digital tools (NextUse AI, AZGARD), green technologies and community engagement to align the repurposing of buildings with community and environmental needs. Expected results include a more efficient, data-driven decision-making process for asset management, increased operational capacity through a new dedicated unit, improved civic engagement, and a scalable model for urban regeneration that reduces the city's carbon footprint and enhances social inclusion.
