GRID-Kallithea

GRID (Green Routes Intelligent Districts) is a collaboration between the municipalities of Kallithea and Moschato-Tavros to redesign public spaces and tackle extreme heat. Using participatory methods and advanced digital tools, the project targets urban risk hotspots with limited green space and vulnerable populations. It addresses overheating, social inequality, poor connectivity and low climate tech capacity. Innovative solutions include smart infrastructure, green corridors, mobile apps and local capacity building, creating scalable tools for resilient, equitable urban development across Europe.

The Municipalities of Kallithea and Moschato-Tavros are strategic hubs in the southern Athens metropolitan area, connecting the city centre to the redeveloping Faliron Bay waterfront, a major regeneration zone shaped by New European Bauhaus (NEB) principles. These districts are densely populated, with minimal greenery and limited public space, making them highly vulnerable to urban heat and environmental stress.

As in other areas of southern Europe, extreme heat increasingly threatens the liveability of these urban areas, increasing energy consumption and disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations. The GRID project aims to address these interlinked challenges in Kallithea and Moschato-Tavros by leveraging advanced digital tools and technologies. Its ambition is to develop scalable, adaptive heat risk management solutions that promote climate-friendly urban investments, spatial planning, and continuous digital services tailored to community needs.

GRID fosters participatory governance through digital platforms, integrating real-time IoT data, AI insights, and co-creation with residents via AR/VR and public participation Web GIS (ppWebGIS) tools. Expected outcomes include reduced urban heat, enhanced thermal comfort, strengthened urban resilience and improved connectivity – particularly between Athens and the waterfront – through investments in local green routes networks. This holistic approach supports sustainable urban growth and builds climate-resilient communities.
