FAVORIT+ : Blueprint for Integrated Redesign of Urban Blocks for Energy-Efficient & Sustainable Communities

The FAVORIT+ project uses an integrated approach combining nature-based, technological and people-centred solutions to support sustainable renovation of large Soviet-era housing estates. It aims to create a new recipe for energy resilience and climate neutrality in dense urban environments including the use of bio-based materials (to replace polystyrene) and renewable energy sources (biosolar roofs). It aims to promote a co-owned transformation with the local community, including piloting microgrids, creating energy communities and developing an AI-driven digital twin to support energy optimisation, simulations and data-driven collaborative decision making.
About
The FAVORIT+ project seeks to create a new integrated solution for energy resilience and climate neutrality in large communist-era housing estates. It focuses on the Favorit neighbourhood of District 6 in Bucharest, characterised by large housing estates which have typically not seen any renovations in the past 50 years.
The project aims to identify and pilot bio-based materials as alternatives to polystyrene in renovation and insulation works – this aims to reduce the environmental impact of such renovations and also create new value chains for local biomass producers.
FAVORIT+ also seeks to support faster adoption of renewable energy sources (RES) in dense urban environments, including by piloting biosolar roofs, micro-grids and AI-driven digital twining for energy optimisation & simulations.
At the heart of the project is a community-focused approach which seeks to engage and empower the local community in a co-owned transformation, including data-driven collaborative decision making and new governance models supporting energy communities.
FAVORIT+ aims to start by fostering positive communities, offering a replicable set of solutions that address all urban block spatial components and intangible assets in large housing estates. It will provide a new Energy and Climate Resilience Index to benchmark renovation practices in large housing estates, acting as a template for replicating solutions.
