The Co.nTe project, co-funded by the European Union, tackles urban and peri-urban land degradation in Câmara de Lobos, Calheta and Ribeira Brava, three municipalities on the south coast of Madeira. Led by the Municipality of Câmara de Lobos, it involves 11 partners, including municipalities, research institutions and innovation agencies, to foster sustainable urban development together. The project runs from October 2025 to June 2029, focusing on climate resilience and sustainable agriculture.

Co.nTe’s main objective is to co-create a climate-adapted future for Madeira by leveraging generative AI, emerging technologies and participatory governance. It will do this by developing innovative solutions like the Societal Token scheme, Resilience Living Lab, and Tech for Land Use programme to enhance sustainable land use, support local food chains, and promote climate neutrality. The project engages 80 stakeholders, including farmers, SMEs and technology providers, to ensure inclusive governance and economic viability.

In terms of expected results, Co.nTe will establish a self-sustaining Societal Token scheme, a Resilience Living Lab as a hub for innovation, and new technology-driven agricultural practices. It targets 254 000 inhabitants, aiming to improve agri-business capacities, create new digital services, and foster public-private partnerships. With three urban planning charrettes enabling focused collaborative discussions ,  Co.nTe is set to enhance participatory planning, reduce land degradation, and ensure scalability to other EU cities.
