GREEN MOBILITY

Challenge

The need for increasing the green mobility and use of zero-emission transport infrastructure in urban and suburban areas of Zagreb Urban Agglomeration and beyond, as well as to promote sustainable urban and regional mobility, increase traffic safety and ensure better connectivity of bicycle lanes in the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County.

Solution

The Greenway Project – State Bicycle Route No. 2 is considered to be the most integrated project of the Zagreb Urban Agglomeration in the financial period 2014-2020. The project includes the preparation of technical documentation for the construction and equipment of the State Bicycle Route No. 2 and the construction and equipment of the first (pilot) phase.

The aim of the project is to increase the use of zero-emission transport in urban and suburban areas of the City of Zagreb and Zagreb Urban Agglomeration, by developing the cycling infrastructure in the east-west direction, along the Sava river, from the border with Slovenia to Lijevi Dubrovčak, with a total length of 121.6 km. It is also planned to equip the trail with additional equipment including lighting, chargers for e-bikes, rest areas, parking lots, info signs, traffic counters, as well as to improve the access to the existing Sava bridges and access to existing cycling and road infrastructure.

Among the expected results of the project there are: improvement of the bicycle network of the City of Zagreb and the Zagreb County; increase of the number of bicycle users as a means of transport in daily travel and navetism; increase of traffic safety; reduction of traffic jams; increase of the quality of life of residents; reduction of air pollution; increase of the attractiveness of the City of Zagreb and the Zagreb County; improvement of the tourist offer.

The estimated value of the project according to the feasibility study is 122,931,861.20 kuna.

The project goal is to promote sustainable urban and regional mobility, increase traffic safety and ensure better connectivity of bicycle lanes in the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County. In addition, the project promotes local natural beauty, rural development, active tourism, a healthy lifestyle and encourages the connection among people, having, as well, the potential to attract a large number of European and domestic cyclists.

In 2021, the European Commission launched a pilot project to improve functional area approaches in the EU and has partnered with the World Bank to implement this initiative. As part of the project, the project team collaborated with 12 functional areas from seven EU countries, providing them with tailored technical support and assistance: Zagreb Urban Agglomeration (Croatia), Brno Metropolitan Area (Czech Republic), West Athens (Greece), Lake Balaton Area (Hungary), Kalisz-Ostrów Agglomeration, Kraków Metropolitan Area (Poland), Jiu Valley and Jiu Conurbation Functional Area, Caraș-Timiș Functional Area, Cluj Metropolitan Area, Oradea Metropolitan Area, West Ialomița Functional Area (Romania), and Trenčín Functional Area (Slovakia).
